Of course it’s important to treat kids occasionally with the newest toy or the latest game. But as the economy sinks and money gets tighter, it seems to me these types of purchases are also some of the first to cut back on. So I’m extremely surprised that even as families would reduce spending on groceries and school supplies, our toy budgets swell: Americans reduced average supermarket spending by about .5% from 2009 to 2010 while in the same period, toy industry sales grew by 2%.

Swiss entrepreneur Ueli Anliker went completely nuts (while on drugs and pretending to be Stevie Wonder?) and added some extras to a normal Mercedes SLR McLaren.

The garish body has 25 layers of red paint with 5kg of gold dust worked into it. Each of the car’s wheels are covered in 24 carat gold as are the headlights and door sills. The car’s supercharged 5.4-litre engine has had power boosted from 640bhp to 999bhp – giving it a top speed of more than 210mph. Inside, there are jewelled indicators, a gold-trimmed interior and steering wheel and ruby-covered switchgear. In total there are more than 600 rubies within the car’s interior. Mr Anliker is now selling the Mercedes with a ‘minimum’ price-tag of $11-million – making it the world’s most expensive vehicle for sale on the open market. Good luck finding a moron, our prediction is that he’ll either be from an Arab state or Soviet.

Built by Lego enthusiast Mike Doyle, this Victorian Era house is made entirely of Lego bricks with no other elements used. It has an eerie feel to it looking as though it’s abandoned with an old tree crushing one side.

From Mike’s page

Abandoned houses offer unique opportunities from a visual point of view. The deterioration transforms materials. Texture on top of texture. New patterns overtaking old ones. Nature repossessing. This textural aspect to deterioration and the patterns that it creates can be rich and fascinating to look at.

I also find that the experience of seeing a deteriorated house (or any familiar object) interesting. When looking at the image we see a dual image of the house – one as it is, and one as it was. You see a huge hole in the side of the house not just as a hole, but also as an interruption of the known. And so the mind seeks to recreate the known. We fill in the holes. We project. Our eyes follow the angle of the broken awning to a point, now destroyed, and we can feel the mass that was of the front 3rd floor. The same with the porch covering. This visual duality – the mind flipping between destruction and pre-destruction – is magic. It’s entertaining and engaging.

Here are the specs of this awesome model:

5′ x 3′ x 2′
50k – 60k pieces
Black, white, dark and bluish gray, clear trans and black trans colors used.
No foreign materials (wood, glue, paint or otherwise) were used – this is pure Lego.
Approx 450 hours to build

With it being Valentine’s Day we figured it would be a good idea to look around the net and see if it was true. The results were pretty shocking and sometimes vomit inducing (yeah, there was even a site for that). We gathered up the top 10 that we liked and decided to share them with you in case there’s any lonely hearts looking for that special someone/something this Valentine’s Day.

10. DateCraft
This one isn’t too weird but it seems to be one of the only sites to tackle the issue of finding that special partner for World of Warcraft players. Here’s what we don’t get, most WoW players spend all their time online playing, so, why do you need someone around trying to distract you?
datecraft.com

9. Women Behind Bars
Come on, you know you like those bad girls right? How about one so bad that she’s serving 5-10? Think about it, by the time one of these girls get out of the Pen, you won’t have to do anything but meet her at the gate and, once she rolls you for your wallet and car keys, she’s yours! Of course, she’ll probably shank you on sight, but it’s a small price to pay for true love.
womenbehindbars.com

8. Meet an Ostomate
They are portable, they are practical and they are leak free! Fulfill your fantasies and all of your dreams of tying up your darlin in plastic tubing and have your way with her.
meetanostomate.com

7. Trekpassions
Live long and prosper with your true soul mate. A little gallery searching could find you a six-breasted mama all ready and willing to call you Kirk. If you are little standoffish, perhaps a Vulcan honey is what you need, but for those of you techie guys, a Borg chick would be right up your alley. By the end of the night, you’ll be saying, “But I’m giving her all she’s got, Captain!”
trekpassions.com

6. Date A Little
They say good things come in small packages, and you can even hook up in your hybrid with no complaints. Living a life of forced perspective is just what you guys who are a tad lacking in the endowment department need to boost your ego. Your unit will look enormous in her little hands. You can take your little elf out during the holidays and she’ll be a hit at parties too! You can’t go wrong, and we’re pretty sure it won’t take much to get a 65 pound person drunk enough to get into the sack.
datealittle.com

5. Pounced
We compiled the list using the raw traffic data so we can determine not what we thought was the best, but what you the viewers thought. Technically StrangeBeaver has only been in existence since May of this year, but in the last 8 months we’ve managed to rack up some good traffic and a following of some really great people.

With Thanksgiving time coming up soon, we wanted to find something a little different this year. What we found is if you look hard enough on the internet, you can find some truly horrifying and/or awesome things. This recipe was featured on Chow.com but didn’t really get a good reaction out of people. The end result is both appetizing and horrifying all at the same time. So since we’re big fans of the odd, we present, the Turkey Cake Recipe:

Game plan: The mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes can be made ahead. Rewarm them just prior to assembling the cake, so they are easy to spread.

If your attention lapses and the marshmallows happen to burn or catch fire while broiling (this actually happened to us), relax and just blow out the flames. Peel away the burnt marshmallows, leaving the sweet potato layer intact, and start over with a fresh topping of marshmallows.

INGREDIENTS

For the turkey layers:
* Unsalted butter, for coating the pans
* 2 pounds ground turkey breast
* 1 cup quick-cooking oats
* 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, grated on the small holes of a box grater
* 1/3 cup ketchup
* 1/3 cup finely chopped yellow onion
* 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh Italian parsley
* 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
* 2 tablespoons soy sauce
* 1 1/2 teaspoons minced fresh thyme leaves
* 1 teaspoon minced fresh sage leaves
* 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
* 2 medium garlic cloves, minced

For the sweet potato layer:
* 1 pound sweet potatoes
* 1/4 cup whole milk
* 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (1/4 stick)
* 1 tablespoon packed light brown sugar
* 1 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more as needed
* Pinch ground mace or nutmeg
* Freshly ground black pepper

To assemble:
* About 5 cups or 1 recipe Sour Cream Mashed Potatoes, warm
* 1/2 cup cranberry sauce, such as our Cranberry and Citrus Sauce, chilled, excess liquid drained
* 2 1/2 cups Sausage Stuffing, warm
* 1 1/2 cups mini marshmallows
* Gravy, for serving (optional)

Instructions
For the turkey layers:

Heat the oven to 350°F and arrange a rack in the middle. Coat 2 (8-inch) cake pans with butter; set aside.

Place all remaining ingredients in a large bowl and mix, using clean hands, until combined (don’t squeeze or overwork). Divide the mixture evenly between the pans, spreading it to the edges and smoothing out the top. Bake until cooked through and the cakes begin to pull away from the edges of the pans, about 25 minutes. Remove from the oven (but leave the oven on), and let cool for about 10 minutes. Using a paper towel, blot away any excess fat from the cake layers’ surface; set aside. (While the turkey cakes are cooking, make the sweet potatoes.)

For the sweet potato layer:

Place a steamer basket in a large saucepan with a tightfitting lid. Add enough water to reach just below the basket; bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to low and gently simmer.

Meanwhile, peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into 1-inch cubes. Once the water is simmering, place the cubes in the steamer basket, cover, and steam until the potatoes just give when pierced with a fork, about 20 to 25 minutes. Transfer the steamer basket with the potatoes to a plate; set aside.

Discard the water in the saucepan. Place the milk and butter in the saucepan and heat over low heat until the butter has melted. Turn off the heat, add the reserved sweet potatoes and the brown sugar, salt, and mace or nutmeg, and mash with a potato masher until smooth. Taste and season with salt and pepper as desired; keep warm.

To assemble:

Arrange a rack in the lower third of the oven.

Run a knife around the edge of the turkey cakes. Unmold one of the turkey layers and place it bottom-side up on an overturned 8-inch cake pan or in an ovenproof serving dish.

With a long knife or offset spatula, evenly spread 1 1/4 cups of the mashed potatoes over the top of the cake, leaving a 1/2 -inch border (keep the remaining potatoes warm).

Using the back of a clean spoon, spread the cranberry sauce evenly over the mashed potatoes.

Using your hands, gently pack the stuffing in an even layer over the cranberry sauce, using one hand to keep any stuffing from falling off the side.

Press gently on the stuffing to make sure it adheres to the mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce.

Evenly spread another 1 1/4 cups of the mashed potatoes over the stuffing (keep the remaining potatoes warm).

<li">Unmold the second turkey layer and place it bottom-side up on top of the mashed potatoes.

Transfer the cake pan or serving dish with the partially assembled cake to a baking sheet and bake until heated through, about 30 to 40 minutes (an instant-read thermometer should register 165°F).

Remove from the oven and set aside. Heat the oven to broil.

With a long knife or offset spatula, evenly coat the outside (but not top) of the entire cake with the remaining mashed potatoes (you may have a little left over).

With a clean long knife or offset spatula, evenly spread all of the sweet potatoes on top of the cake.

Arrange the marshmallows across the top and gently press them into the sweet potatoes.

Return the baking sheet with the assembled cake to the oven and broil until the marshmallows are golden, about 1 to 2 minutes (watch closely so the marshmallows don’t burn).

Using two flat spatulas, carefully transfer the cake to a serving dish. Serve immediately with gravy, if desired.

*Video from ’09 but worth another look*
In honor of Breast Cancer Awerness month starting October 1st we..oh screw it, you won’t even read anything we put here so let’s just get right to the video:

From HuffPo
Canadian TV Host Aliya-Jasmine Sovani has stirred up some controversy with a new breast cancer awareness video called “Save the Boobs”.

Sovani (also the woman in the video) writes in to the Huffington Post:

[The video] was designed to promote a local charity, called the Boobyball for young people under the age of 30 to get aware about a serious subject that affects women my age (but is often thought of as a “grandma’s disease”)… I was not hired by a company to show my assets, this was completely my concept and after finding out my cousin will be losing one of her breasts to cancer THIS month, I agreed to lend my face to the cause.

The video features a buxom young woman in a bikini whose breasts are being admired by men and women alike. The tagline is “You know you like them, now it’s time to save the boobs.”

The ad is clearly aimed at a younger generation and is designed to be memorable as well as appeal to men:

“The spots are definitely not for everyone,” charity Founder M.J. Decoteau told ABC News. “Young people are picking up pamphlets with a 65-year-old woman on the cover and probably tossing them out. We’re really about creating a bold way of communicating the message in a fun way that’s going to stop them in their tracks. We’re hoping that they get the take-away message that is to be breast aware.”

The singer fell out of a harness which was supposed to catapult her across the crowd at a gig in Nuremberg, but instead she crashed into a barricade – watch the video below.

The concert was ended immediately and the singer was taken to hospital, though later assured fans that she was expected to make a full recovery following the accident.

“To all my nurnberg fans – I am so so so sorry to end the show that way. I am embarassed and very sorry. I’m in ambulance now but I will b fine,” she tweeted last night.

She later added: “Ok all my lovers out there – nothings broken, no fluid in the lungs, just seriously sore. I made that barricade my b*tch!!!! Thanx nurnberg.”

The singer has not yet confirmed if her injuries will keep her from upcoming performances on her Funhouse Summer Carnival Tour, which is scheduled to continue through Eastern Europe, Russia, the Czech Republic, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Norway.

Pink performed a similar stunt without incident at the Isle Of Wight Festival in June.
