US-based digital artist Alex Mitchell has reimagined the characters from The Avengers movie as Japanese heroes during Japan’s warring states periods, the Sengoku era.
Captain America is called Taishou or General. He has an umbrella as a round element to replace the shield.
Hulk, oni-themed, is a sorcerer who uses paper ofuda to seal in the moster Kaibutsu in himself. He has paper talismans with the words “to seal away” written on them, torn clothing with seal script versions of oni, and a Buddhist rosary to control emotions.
Iron Man, Tetsu-kin (literally Iron-man) has an elaborate samurai armor, a distinctive mask for recognizability, and foreign technologies such as firearms.
Thor, a Japanese deity inspired by Raijin/Raiden, has a rain hat, propoer wet weather geta sandals, and Raijin’s hammer-like drumsticks and meteor hammer.
Loki, similar to Kagu-tsuchi fire god is Raijin’s brother and enemy of gods. He has deer horns, to replace his helmet, like an Asian dragon. He has a mirror (Mitchell’s version of the Tesseract), and was given his father’s spear (representing the scepter) by Lords of Yomi (the underworld) to go against the mortal world.
Black Widow, Hawkeye and Nick Fury were given ninja-makeovers, and animal companions as messengers.
