Disney animator Frank Johnston (who may be a combo of Disney Animators Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston) finds out that LeFou is gay in the new Disney reboot of Beauty and the Beast. Frank is concerned with the reaction that the news is getting and makes it his job, as a Disney Animator of over 50 years, to set the record straight when it comes to gay characters in Disney movies.
So much thought and care goes into every Pixar and Disney movie that they’re chock full of hidden secrets and Easter eggs for fans to unpack. Well, that’s the truth sometimes, like when a character from Ratatouille shows up Inside Out, or a little fishy from The Little Mermaid appears in Moana. You can also find the genie’s lamp from Aladdin appear in the “naturalist club” of Zootopia, if those kinds of crossovers are what you’re looking for. You’ll find plenty of hidden details like that in this list if it’s what you’re looking for, but we’ve got a few other surprises for you as well. Sometimes, Disney animators would probably rather keep their secrets close to the chest, like when they reused animation from Snow White, The Jungle Book and The AristoCats in a dance sequence from Robin Hood, or the time an image of a topless woman appeared in a home video release of The Rescuers. But on top of these secrets and hidden details, we also have more interesting trivia in this list, like the information that Walt Disney brought real deer into the animation studio during production on Bambi, or the fact that Toy Story might be set in the Home Improvement shared universe.
Zootopia is a beloved family film that recently took home the Academy Award for “Best Animated Feature” but we wondered what the movie would look like re-imagined as a gritty crime-thriller.
Take a trip down memory lane with the Disney classic that taught us all that it’s what’s on the inside (of your big castle) that matters most – Beauty and the Beast!
